Baptism Records 1834-2006

General Notes:

Note that birth dates were often NOT recorded. (A ? indicates a doubtful reading)

When searching for a name, beware of variant spellings. Just enter the first few letters if you are not sure.
REMEMBER that the name may not have been recorded as you think it should be spelled.

The Register Volumes are not in reality numbered, the numbers refer as follows:

1 1834-1860 St John; 2 1860-1904 St John; 3 1906-1926 St John; 4 1926-1958 St John; 5 1958-1975 St John; 6 1975-2006 St John; 7 1908-1964 St Oswald; 8 1964-2001 St Oswald; 9 2001- St Oswald

The churches named here are where the majority of baptisms in each register were performed. There is no separate register for Holy Trinity Kerridge – baptisms at HT are recorded in St John’s registers with a note indicating HT. In the absence of any such note, it has been assumed that the baptisms occurred at St John’s.

Notes in italics are comments by the transcriber and do not appear in the Registers.

The early registers do not have a place in which to enter the date of birth. This date has been appended many but not all cases.

If a child was baptised at home (private baptism), he or she would often be ‘received into the Church’ at a later date. In a number of cases, the date of being ‘Received’ has been added to the baptism entry at a later date, sometimes years later. Some apparent duplication in the register may arise from the two events being recorded as sepaprate entries.

The more recent registers give the names of godparents (not always very legibly). These details have NOT been transcribed on these webpages.

Where there is an entry in the burial register for a child that died soon after birth and this APPARENTLY matches the baptism details, the burial date has been added as a note.

The full name of the minister performing the baptism has been included where known, although the register only normally shows a signature. If the minister is one of the parish clergy, the word vicar or curate is appended. Otherwise the name of the parish or other institution has been added (if known) relating to the minister’s normal location at the time of the baptism. This additional information is OFTEN NOT shown in the registers.
