Isaac Watts (1674-1748) was a Congregationalist minister. He published The Psalms of David Imitated in the Language of the New Testament in 1719 – a paraphrase of all but twelve of the Psalms. This hymn is his version of Psalm 92 . His other hymns include Jesus shall reign where’er the sun (Ps 72), O God our help in ages past (Ps 90), Joy to the world, When I survey the wondrous cross and Come let us join our cheerful songs.
Handel Parker (1857-1928) was a musician from Yorkshire. He was an organist and choirmaster at various churches in that county, and worked with a number of brass bands there. He spent a few years at Nassau Cathedral (Bahamas) before returning to Yorkshire. “Deep Harmony” is his best-known hymn tune.
